1. Smoky Mountain Tracks (2006)
North Carolina native Raine Stockton, a dog trainer and the ex-wife of a deputy sheriff, knows the woods of Hanover County as well as anyone. She stopped volunteering for Search and Rescue work after a tragic loss, but now she reluctantly returns to active duty-along with a young and inexperienced Golden Retriever named Cisco-to help find a mother and six-year-old girl who have been kidnapped and taken deep into the wilderness. Suspecting there’s more to the case than meets the eye, Raine must struggle to overcome her personal demons, turn her search in new directions-and learn to trust Cisco to lead the way.

2. Rapid Fire (2006)
With her kennel business and her part-time job with the forest service, Raine Stockton is having a hectic summer when the FBI drops in to see her about her old flame Andy Fontana. Fontana disappeared from her life when he was connected with an act of sabotage that left several people dead. Now, he’s an eco-terrorist on the Ten Most Wanted list, and the feds think Raine can help them bring him to justice.
The FBI suspects Andy has returned to retrieve a fortune in diamonds he hid in the wilderness. He also may be responsible for a recent wave of property damage, and an unsolved hit-and-run death. With the help of her loyal Golden Retriever, Cisco, Raine must discover the truth about the man she once loved, and uncover a killer in the process.

3. Gun Shy (2007)
Michelle White may have committed suicide. For days, her body has lain in a cabin along with her terrified dog. So they call in Raine Stockton. Raine hardly has time for the poor dog she’s named Hero. But as she falls for him, questions surface about his late owner-and Raine realizes that Hero may be the only witness to a murder.

4. Bone Yard (2011)
Dog trainer Raine Stockton has lived all her life in the quiet community of Hansonville, North Carolina. She is the daughter of a judge, the niece of a sheriff, and the ex-wife of a deputy. She does not lead the kind of life, generally speaking, in which people get buried in her back yard. But when Cisco, Raine’s mischievous golden retriever, digs up human bones beneath the site of what will soon be her new training kennel, mayhem ensues. With the state police swarming everywhere, concerns about a mass grave and suspicions of a serial killer, Raine is surrounded by chaos. But when her beautiful collie Majesty keeps disappearing and cryptic messages from a pet psychic only add to the confusion, Raine soon finds herself plunged into the midst of a mystery that is far too close to home. Can she and Cisco track down the truth before it’s too late?

5. Silent Night (2011)
It’s Christmas time, and for Raine Stockton and her Search and Rescue dog, Cisco, Hansonville, North Carolina is just like a Norman Rockwell painting– except for the rash of thefts of baby Jesus figurines from nativity scenes, an abandoned box of golden retriever puppies that someone leaves beside her mailbox, and a mysterious gift from one of Cisco’s a grateful admirers. Raine already has her hands full with her own misbehaving pooches, unexpected house guests, and a complicated new relationship. But when a newborn is abandoned in the manger of the town’s living nativity and Raine walks in on what appears to be the scene of a murder, she has more to worry about than keeping the Christmas spirit alive.

1. The Private Matter (2003)
The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: The Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms who may have been a traitor. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society – and threatens all he holds dear. From the bawdy houses of London’s night world to the stately drawing rooms of the nobility, Lord John pursues the elusive trails of a vanishing footman and a woman in green velvet, who may hold the key to everything – or nothing.

2. The Brotherhood of the Blade (2007)
the New York Times bestselling author of the Outlander saga brings back one of her most compelling characters: Lord John Grey – soldier, gentleman, and no mean hand with a blade. Here Diana Gabaldon brilliantly weaves together the strands of Lord John’s secret and public lives – a shattering family mystery, a love affair with potentially disastrous consequences, and a war that stretches from the Old World to the New. . . .

In 1758, in the heart of the Seven Years’ War, Britain fights by the side of Prussia in the Rhineland. For Lord John and his titled brother Hal, the battlefield will be a welcome respite from the torturous mystery that burns poisonously in their family’s history. Seventeen years earlier, Lord John’s late father, the Duke of Pardloe, was found dead, a pistol in his hand and accusations of his role as a Jacobite agent staining forever a family’s honor.
Now unlaid ghosts from the past are stirring. Lord John’s brother has mysteriously received a page of their late father’s missing diary. Someone is taunting the Grey family with secrets from the grave, but Hal, with secrets of his own, refuses to pursue the matter and orders his brother to do likewise. Frustrated, John turns to a man who has been both his prisoner and his confessor: the Scottish Jacobite James Fraser.
Fraser can tell many secrets – and withhold many others. But war, a forbidden affair, and Fraser’s own secrets will complicate Lord John’s quest. Until James Fraser yields the missing piece of an astounding puzzle – and Lord John, caught between his courage and his conscience, must decide whether his family’s honor is worth his life.

The Seer series by Linda Joy Singleton
Requirements: ePUB or MOBI reader, 5.38 Mb
Overview: With plots involving twins, cheerleaders, ghosts, psychics and clones, Linda Joy Singleton has published over 25 midgrade and YA books.

Don’t Die, Dragonfly
After getting kicked out of school and sent to live with her grandmother, Sabine Rose is determined to become a “normal” teenage girl. She hides her psychic powers from everyone, even from her grandmother Nona, who also has “the gift.” Having a job at the school newspaper and friends like Penny-Love, a popular cheerleader, have helped Sabine fit in at her new school. She has even managed to catch the eye of the adorable Josh DeMarco. Yet, Sabine can’t seem to get the bossy voice of Opal, her spirit guide, out of her head . . . or the disturbing images of a girl with a dragonfly tattoo. Suspected of a crime she didn’t commit, Sabine must find the strength to defend herself and, later, save a friend from certain danger.

Last Dance
Sabine can’t wait to show off her new boyfriend at the upcoming school dance, but she’s also worried about her grandmother, Nona, who’s suffering from a fatal hereditary illness. The only cure lies within a remedy book, lost long ago. Determined to save Nona, Sabine goes to Pine City to visit a distant relative who may have clues. But there’s someone else clamoring for Sabine’s attention: a fifty-year-old ghost named Chloe who’s been appearing in her dreams. Celebrated by Pine City every year on the anniversary of her tragic death, Chloe has become a town legend. Despite death threats and missing the school dance, Sabine must use her psychic skills to solve the mystery surrounding Chloe’s untimely demise . . . and lay her soul to rest.

Witch Ball

Sabine is finally starting to feel accepted at her new high school. She’s friends with the popular girls and even has a cute boyfriend. But Sabine also has a dark secret-she’s psychic, and was forced to leave her old school after she accurately predicted the death of a football player. Volunteering with her friends to help run the psychic booth at their school’s fundraising carnival, Sabine discovers too late that the fake crystal ball she meant to bring has been mysteriously switched. In its place is the strange “witch ball” she locked away after her grandmother refused to have it in the house. Now the haunted witch ball’s predictions are coming true, and Sabine must solve the mystery before its final prediction-her own death-becomes a deadly reality.

Sword Play
“Help her,” insists the spirit of Kip, the jock from her old school who died in a car accident. But his cryptic message is the last thing on Sabine’s mind as she packs up to move back home. She’s not happy about leaving her friends, her boyfriend, and Nona who’s gravely ill, but won’t dare challenge her mother’s orders. Besides, Sabine’s also harboring hope that she can become close to her family again. Reuniting with her fencing club brings back painful memories of getting kicked out of school and betrayed by her former best friend Brianne, now too entangled with her boyfriend to notice Sabine . . . unlike Kip’s ghost who continues to nag her about someone in trouble. But Kip died alone, so who needs her help? As Sabine researches the events of that tragic night, she pieces together a shocking revelation-knowledge that leads to a dangerous duel with a surprising foe.

Fatal Charm
In this vivid fifth volume of The Seer series, Sabine Rose is reunited with her ill grandmother Nona and her friends at Sheridan Valley. But the excitement of curing Nona-and discovering love with someone new-doesn’t outweigh the burden of her father’s dark secret: a daughter no one but Sabine knows about. Riddled with curiosity, Sabine uses astral projection to spy on her half sister Jade. And then one night-while out of body-she witnesses a gruesome murder! The victim appears to be Jade’s mother, but the next day reveals she is very much alive. Was it all a terrible nightmare? A puzzling psychic message, feelings for two different guys, building resentment towards her father and Jade-it’s almost too much to bear. And when the killer from her nightmare turns out to be real, Sabine finds she must open her heart to the person she trusts the least.

Magician’s Muse
After a difficult breakup with her boyfriend, Josh, Sabine is relieved that life seems to be settling down to some semblance of normalcy. Now Josh can find an adoring girlfriend that will appreciate his magician skills, while Sabine can be with her true love, Dominic, who does not treat her psychic abilities as a freak of nature. This illusion is shattered when she receives a frantic phone call from Josh’s mother. He is missing, and Sabine becomes plagued with disturbing visions of his fate. To further complicate matters, her half-sister, Jade, has betrayed her by dating Sabine’s arch-enemy, Evan, and new threats against her beloved Dominic prevent her from turning to him for comfort. Sabine must summon both her wits and her supernatural abilities to save Josh and thwart the dangers that seem to be approaching those she loves from every direction.

Wine Country Mystery series by Ellen Crosby
Requirements: Sony Reader, MS Reader, Mobi Reader, 2.2 – 2.5 – 2.9 MB
Overview: Ellen Crosby is a freelance reporter for The Washington Post and former foreign correspondent for ABC News Radio. She has spent many years overseas in Europe and the former Soviet Union but now lives in Virginia with her husband and three sons.

The Merlot Murders: A phone call at two thirty in the morning is never good news. Lucie Montgomery’s semiestranged brother, Eli, calls her in France to tell her their father, Leland, has been killed in a hunting accident on the family’s five-hundred-acre Virginia vineyard just as the fall harvest is about to begin. By the time he calls, Eli has already made funeral arrangements with what Lucie argues is indecent haste.
It is an emotional trip home — the first since an automobile accident two years ago, which left Lucie disabled and dependent on a cane. Her family’s once elegant home and winery are now shabby and run-down, thanks to her father’s penchant for fringy business deals. Eli, also cash-strapped and desperate to support his new wife’s extravagant lifestyle, has already convinced their rebellious younger sister, Mia, to sell the debt-ridden estate and reap the profits from the valuable land it sits on, overruling Lucie’s protests.

The Chardonnay Charade: The Chardonnay Charade begins with a daring helicopter flight in the middle of the night. Facing a freak spring frost that threatens to kill the grapes in her vineyard, Lucie Montgomery hires a chopper to fly over the vines in order to blow warm air on them. But her thoughts soon turn from grapes to murder when she discovers the body of Georgia Greenwood, a controversial political candidate, lying near the fields. Georgia’s husband, Ross, Lucie’s friend and doctor, immediately falls under suspicion. To make matters worse, Ross, a renowned collector of Civil War documents, has just discovered a letter that seems to prove that Confederate president Jefferson Davis had prior knowledge of the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. In the small town of Atoka, Virginia — proud home to the “Gray Ghost,” the Confederacy’s legendary guerrilla commander — the letter is a bombshell.

The Bordeaux Betrayal:
It has been a year since Lucie Montgomery took over running her family vineyard at the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The Bordeaux Betrayal now sweeps her into a mystery that began more than two centuries ago in France and ends in murder not far from Montgomery Estate Vineyard.
When author and historian Valerie Beauvais turns up dead the night after a verbal brawl with a noted wine critic on the grounds of Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home, Lucie is certain Valerie’s death is related to something she knew concerning the authenticity of the priceless Washington Bordeaux.

The Riesling Retribution: When a tornado rips through Montgomery Estate Vineyard, it not only destroys some of Lucie Montgomery’s newest grapevines but also unearths a grave in an abandoned field. The discovery sets tongues wagging in the small town of Atoka, Virginia, especially after the police inform Lucie that the odds are good someone in her family is responsible — possibly for murder.
But Lucie has more to worry about than family secrets buried with the victim in her vineyard. Her charming new farm manager clashes constantly with Quinn Santori, her winemaker, and accidents, broken equipment, and injuries fuel the combustible atmosphere around the winery. Lucie’s complicated feelings for Quinn — romantic and professional — are tested when she learns he may be involved in disturbing activities that could cost him his job.

The Viognier Vendetta: When Lucie Montgomery visits Washington, D.C., during cherry blossom season she doesn’t expect her reunion with old friend Rebecca Natale is a setup. But Rebecca disappears into thin air after running an errand for her boss, billionaire philanthropist and investment guru Sir Thomas Asher. Also missing: an antique silver wine cooler looted by British soldiers before they burned the White House during the War of 1812.
The next morning Lucie identifies Rebecca’s neatly folded clothes found in a rowboat floating in the Potomac River. Is it suicide, murder – or an elaborate scheme to disappear? A clandestine meeting in the U.S. Capitol, a startling revelation on a windy hill, and cryptic messages from Rebecca cloaked in eighteenth-century poetry are all part of the suspenseful tale of whether Rebecca is alive or dead – and the truth about Asher Investments.

If you want to read a book that follows a formula and is virtually indistinguishable from the last urban fantasy romance you read, or reads like a standard romance, except for the fact that the hero or heroine has fangs, fur, or both, then look elsewhere. The Night Huntress series is fresh, though it does have some of the hallmarks of the genre. Cat and Bones are a fantastic pair, perfectly simpatico, even when they are at odds. What’s more, he’s one of the most compelling heroes since J.D. Robb’s Roarke. Don’t just take my word for it though, read the books.
