On the island of Berk, which is beset by dragons that raid their stock of sheep, the Viking chief Stoick the Vast’s son Hiccup works as an apprentice to the blacksmith, Gobber the Belch. Hiccup is undersized compared to the average Viking, and doesn’t have the martial skills of others his age. Although the boy is unorthodoxly inventive, he is also notorious for being destructively clumsy.
In the face of this disdain, Hiccup desperately seeks to become a dragon-slayer in order to not only earn his father’s respect, but also impress Astrid, a competent, aggressive young woman on whom he has a crush. To accomplish these goals, Hiccup plans to attempt to defeat a Night Fury, a rare and greatly feared dragon that has never been seen clearly let alone defeated by the Vikings, with a bolas cannon of his own design.
